INTRODUCTION

  • Take Charge is a national communications campaign urging British consumers to “recycle batteries responsibly” and, in doing so, avoid the risk of fires associated with improper battery disposal.
  • The long-term success of the campaign is highly dependent upon supporters sharing the campaign content across their own channels, so we thank you for your support and interest. This document provides a detailed overview of how to participate in the campaign this year.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVE

  • Promote safe recycling and disposal routes for batteries and other potentially hazardous small appliances such as vapes to reduce fire risk in residual waste and dry recycling collection vehicles and waste treatment facilities.

  • Friday 20th October 2023 / Loft at the Exchange Ilford, Redbridge / 9am – 5pm

CAMPAIGN ACTIVITIES - resident engagement

  1. A vibrant team will be at the 2023 Recycle Week to engage residents on appropriate battery recycling procedures
  1. Display of demo kits (including distribution of informative stickers for reusable household containers for battery storage)
  2. How and where to dispose batteries and small appliances safely across East London Waste Authority regions
  3. Promotion of any producer/retailer take-back schemes, highlighting the risk of fires as well as the environmental benefits of battery and disposable vapes recycling
  1. Practical challenges of battery waste will be shown by the presence of Elephant Jumbo – a creative arts structure made from batteries
  2. Informative display of posters and banners to highlight:
  • How do I recycle my batteries (using a battery recycling decision tree)?
  • What happens when I recycle my batteries?
  • Leaflets designed to inspire children to identify their closest recycling point(s) using a post code locator.
  • Rewarding stickers for kids to show that they are going to encourage their parents / carers to recycle batteries from their toys, electronic gadget, electronic toothbrushes etc.
